She was inconsistent in that she said at f'irst they thought it mit:;ht be something very high catching the light or the sun one hour oefore da~m, and on the other hand, she said that the obje be~ow the overcast, when told that there was an overcast. Mr o watched the north-going light with an opera glass but could se more than he saw at first. Both she and her husband like to fish at night and are familiar with the way stars look and the manner in which planes go across the sky. They stated the usual thing we get in these reports. "They n ever saw any- thing like it~ but they would like the Air Force to tell them what it was she awakened her husband she said, up and watch these lights." Never saw any shape, only a light, o sound, and I questioned her closely on noises in the neighborhood. At that hour she says there are no noises because they live in a residential section. Both objects never varied in speed and always went at the same speed. This remains an unknown unless ~-te can sho\-r that at that precise time one of the satellites was going on a south to north passage. If so, we might conclude one light was a satellite, the other a plane, and the rendezvous purely an illusion. We need further information on the a ctual cloud cover and on the satellite schedule. Balloons are ruled out, and I rather think helicopters are, but not necessarily. If helicopters, then their actionu were rather strange. No green or red lights were ever noticed, only one light apiece, and a. very white light, slowly pulsating. The traJectory was always n straight line, there being no weaving or intermittent .motion except the time when they apparently stopped. I think sending a 164 would now do very little good since I thirut I have squeezed out all the information she, at least, has. Now that I think of it, I quite f'orgo~ to aok if sae herself had seen any stars, although the original report said that some stars were visible. The moon vas a t first quarter and ~o had set long before. Suggest we get the weather racords, and I can .further drop her a note and ask her specifically if she saw stars. The following is a summary of the events observe d ~00 to Upon. being awakene~ by my wife and asked to observe something in the sky, I saw a pair ot what appeared to be stars ot approx- imately the tirst magnitude, or about the brightness. or the belt stars ot orion. Their distance apart appeared to be about one halt the distance of the adjacent stars in the Orion belt.. Alter about one minute, the northernmost light began to move in a northerly direction, and when no longe~ observable from the southern windo ot our bedroom, we both hasti1r. dressed and went outside and easily picked up the moving light. The obaervation ot the moving light w1 th a pair of 6 x 15 binoc:ulara waa: eaa)r, but there was no. appar- en~nlargement ot the object. The movement wa&. now and had been trom the time it was first noticed on a stead northern course, almost, it not due north. The only apparent:. change seemed to occur when the Bessemer Converter at National Works, USS, began to . blow' a heat and the sky became illuminated in the north a bova the mil~. The light appeared to stop at this event. The mill is about a mile north ot our home and in the valley, we being on a hilL but not in direct sight ot the mill. Very shortly the light was lost from The following observations were also noted; The nig.ht was very calm, while standing under a tree. to block 1nterte~ence trom a brilliant stree~ light on our corner, it waa noticed tha t the branches were very still and without move- ment. Secondly, there was no moon visible. It was quiet. No sound of elthe~ piston type or Jet typa engine~ were hears. The impression was that the objects were of extreme. height and travel- ing at a good speed tor the altitude. If the objects weee in orbit, it would have been a rather rapid speed. MY attention wa& on thta northerly light. MY wife told me she observe~ the other one to mova toward the aout~. The position of the two light& at the beginning of the obser- vation was to the east by approximately 20 degrees and south by about 30 degrees from the verticle. UFO Case: Report of tele,Phone conversation "\-Tith Mrs cKeesport, Pennsylvania, Unfortunately, the call took better than a half an hour, but I 't shake her story, although getting inf'ormation frotu her was some- times like pulling teeth. The general picture was this: She and her husband were asleep as prior to 4:00 AM, 6 July , 1965. The bed faces a large window with no blinds, southern exposure. Horizon by neighbor's rooftop, but still giving good view of sky. Mrs. for one reason or another and saw a light like Echo coming rectl.y up from the south over the neighbor's rooftop. The light was white, but slowly pulsating. It never blinked off completely. It was followed at some dlstance, she wasn't quite sure, by an identical light as to intensity and color a nd speed. The first light stopped at about an altitude 45 while the other one caught up with it, and according to Mrs. almost b e came like one. It ~ras at this time that she decided to wake r husband who is, she says, a light sleeper. Her husband did not see the lights ccme together, but did see them separa~e. The duration of the rendezvous was, after much questioning, probably less than a minute. One of the lights returned to the south over essentially the same path it had come, while the other took off {or continued, because the whole stopping- still may well have been an illusion) to the north. At this point, they both ran downstairs to the porch facing north and watched the object pass 10 east of the zenith and slowly proceed northllard, finally becoming lost in the glare of the Bessemer lights which went on then, illuminat.ing s k y and showing clouds. Mrs. not conscious of any real cloud cover and seemed surprised whe n I her that the weathe r bureau had ~epor~ed 9/lOths overcast. However, the origi nal Air Force report is con- fu::>i:lg on that ; at one points, it says cool, slightly ov ercast, some stars visible, anJ. shortly thereaft er, it says overcast 1.9/10. Could mean 1/lOth. Th'e.:e 'ofe:-e practically no surface winds, and winds alof t were at a fair out -.ere fran t he r..rest or northr..lest, YTOi ch rules out balloons. Mrs. to her story that the ligh~s ne ver disappeared, that is, neve r passed u4~ ~cloud, whlch would indicate that the objects could not have been sat~!~ites < en if we ap?ealed to coaple~e confusion on directions) and yet , lf the lights \/ere that low, it also means that the linear speed must have be~n small. Also, if so low, absence of sound seems strange. Objects like stars of the first magnitude resemble Echo. The wqman's first i mpressions were this was a satellite or air plane, but she became startled "'hen it stood still waiti ng for the other to catch up, with one then going south and the other going north. consistent in story. Northwestern university Evanston, Illinola Dear Dr. Hynek: I am sorry I could not answer your letter sooner, but hava been hospitaliza~ and am just now getting after correspondence. In answe~ to your q~ery, I remember remarking tha~ there were only three noticeabla stars in the sky, and. they were direattly abov~ us. The moon was not visible at any time during the interval. To correct an answer I gave you on the phone, ~ believe I told you I . though~ it was a blinking lign~ rather than a twinkling one. Attar conaultins with my hu&band we decided it was more like a twinkling star. I am enc~os1ng a summary written by my. huahand which may clearr up any information lett. hazyT by my original oplanation.
