The observation reported by Mrs Falls Church, Virginia, on the morning of has all the characteristics of an observation of the moon due to refraction. Since the moon was not reported as being visible and all other data presented is consistent with an observation of the moon, her sighting is regarded a s an observation of this astronomical body. Reported position of the object was just above t he trees to the southwest. The moon was s etting in this approximate position at the time of the sighting. T'ne r..1oon was at first quarter on 12 December reaching a ful l stage on the 19th. tirS Str aus did not comp lete section 8 of FTD Form 164, therefore, 1tJPIU1'C' ,"8 a&elt!ltc" the presence of t he moon in her observation. Weather as reported by the observer, indicates that it was hazy and she stated that no stars were visible. The sequence of changes both in shape and color of the object is consistent with dis- tortion of t~e s etting moon due to haze or an inversion.
