I r ecall t::.:.n..king that their rocket mLxture was too rich as ihe S!)arks or fla1nes wer-e reddish purple. I then realized [ 1night be looking at a "fly in~ S;tucer. " As I ~ontinued driving ea3tward the object climbed to about 1500 feet nnd leveled u(f, coming di.=-e~::~ly toward m e . A t :~at mo1nent it r c1ninded rne of a large sunnower with yellow p :n.als stic - out all around i~; I was l ooking at its front s ide and the p etals were the rocket S~::trks fa"'..n.:.:g ont a.round the ed2;es. This lasted only a second or two, then it macle a shat'p loop up\vard n.ntl almost reversed its course, levelLn g off at about 3500 feet and heading n.lmost due c:1st. 1: was as if the operJ.cor had golten his hear ings. The sparks from the rocket now tucn~d a blulsh yellow, making a ball of fire, and in a very few seconds i t was con1pletely out This flying object, as I saw it, was s haped like the cream of an ice cream cone with the rockets whe r e the cracker part is. I would gues3 it was about 60 feet in diameter. I have drawn the attached sketch to show how the object looked to m e in the various positio ns 1 in which I saw it. I cannot say whether it was ascending from the ground at the moment I first saw it or whether lt may have been flying at tree top level when I saw it making its flight straight upward. 1 The sk-:: was clear and &till dark, although it was beginning to turn gray in the east.
