Po~rers, Systems Jlngineer Dearl:orn Observatory On Friday nighl; I made a brief telephone survey in response to a request by J. A. Hynek, JJirector o Dearborn Observator.r, following his apprisal of a UPI report of sight;ingsin Lansing, Michigan. . M;y .t:irst call was to .UPI in 9hicago; a rep6i:Jt of a UFO sight:ing had come but from 1-Iariqn, Indiana. A subsequent call to UPI in Lansing establiwed that reports wer.e coming independently from both locations. .,.: ..,... ..... ~I contacted the Po lie e Department in km Marion, and was infor:oed that police of.i'icers in the -Harion force and in police depar'"wnents o:r ro\l{lding witnesse~eitner .mngle lights or gro_ups of lishts., both stationary and moving, 'Which struck 'tdtnesses as unusual enough to report. Cal 1 s to several of the . other departments in the ~ea did not add much infoxmation, as the \'titnesses \rere on patrol or wera not on duty at the time. In every case I was assured that the witne~ses \\'Ould be availabl a it a complete investigation were Carried out; in most . cases the sightDigs ~re logged, or else the force is small enough that the 3ndividual.s involved will be easy to. find. I did succeed in locating .one witness who saw an orange light low in the northwest sky, apparentJ.,- 200 -SOO teet high, three to six miles awayn, having driven to the west end of' town ( Hartford City)j after hearing over his police car rad:io co!maents about other sightings in progress. Robert 1-Ieredith~ reports that the Bl.a.cr..!ord county- il!ml The officer, another man named s aw the orange li~t. It seems clear that the object was Venus, just prior to setting. The other reports m~ involve more definito motion, ani some involve multiple objects ( at least one observation through binoculars), so the Venus e>.:plenation cannot readily be extended witoout further infonnation Having established that enough infonnation could beobta:!ncd th!'OuJ}l t!:e The first !ansing call was to the Lansing Police Department, \-there I spoke with Sgt. Bitt/Snyder. A series of calls had been received from reside.'1ts _, \ledne sdav Of Southern rans~g far SeVeral days starting at .) Al{ onj2U9~ri1mJCimDOrning 20. A list of names was obtajned from the log of \vedneadq., all from people \rho . complained of a "wierd noise." This noise was described. approximately as Wt?.utttican a 'wbfrr.tngn noise., starting lolr and going high, then stopping. In a subsequent call to the Ingham County Sheriff's office, I 1'/as informed that at 3A!.f Wednesday morning a police car had made an emergency run do"Wn Mjller ne\., nwarb11ngrt siren, which the desk/ xm described as employing a . sounding tt1derd. u When. I read him the list bf addresses of the complainants,; _he ~dentified but not all, of them as being close to the route of the emergency run. : . . It was also fowtd that an elephant was telihe~ed all. night in a shopping cen nearby, part or a promotion stunt. 'nle reports or . .3 AH Wednesday, the~efore may tentatively be connected ldt h the known e~rsency run., at least those definitely concerned ldth noises, l'lhich I understand is true in all cases. . : . :. ~ 'Reports from. Thur~dw and. Friday night; however, cannot be co~ected 1'i.t.h the sil.en., as objects were. seen. 111ere appear to be several. independ~nt sightingo ~:r different objects. One object, ~ bright blue or blue-green light, \'las seen ~escending "to the ground" ( that is, going out of sight following a downward course) by tl';o people, and Mr h was in his om car on the way home \omen he caught sight or the object. Both were impressed sufi"iciently to atte:Jpt to drive to 'l'lhere the object disspppeered, and both seem to have thought it might ba ~ cdrcra.ft in trouble. 'lhe men met subsequently, l>thile acting in his capacity of television anno\ll'X: er ( .for lffiX) at a remote broadcast -r~ restaurant ) in Lansing, and here they each leamed that th~ other had seen the light. Unfortunately., it appears thc.t they have aJ ready oompare their etories, as l:oth reported to me in f'hone call::: Sqtu:i:'~ay-morning that the sighting took place at 12:10 to 12:1Sn. One or t.h e cal 1 s associated with the ni~t of the energency run pr~;rioJts~;t. r.tentioned was from a farmer in GrBlld Ledge, \'Tho cal Jed the ;E:ngb rr:: Co"Crrtz~ Sl;"z :..;& r s , department with a report that he had seen a fiying qUeer land and take orr again. Between phone calls on S~turd~y morning, I received an unsolicited cell from a reporter., of the Lansing State-Journal.., 'Nho was trying to find out if my. calls of the night before were legitimate, and l-ilo had another report which came in just after I had ceased operations Friday night. My impression is that a more ~eta~ed reading of the logs x:i:t togethe~with exanination of records of rgency-car movements w:Ul eliminate the buJ k of reports concerned with noises only, but that other events appear to have occurr~d which requil.e more detailed inves~igation and pro babl.y will c~1 for several diff'ent 1:here follolts a list of explanations~ . agencies and some of the/perscn~ who made reports; this is a very abbreviated list, and is given only for the purpose of aiding identification of the. proper log pages or proper individueJ.s with whom to cormnun~ate MARION, INDIANA POLICE DEPAR'D-IENT1 317 -NO $-S]J~ .
