K. on JUDe 6 a s to be &Jousing considerable :lnterest, I have decided to report rq obse1vations of this object to JOU. . . I waa dri.vi.ng about one trCIIL :Ut. Hope, w. Va., at the time . ' etated when 117 attention attracted by a bright nash or 1 ight in the-~ . ~,~, and I -the object in a position ~ich appeared to be a abort distance t.o the right ot and el1ghtl.T below the moon. It appeared to be about the relati sise as the moon and looked like a bril 1 iant "fireball" having a bright ros7 color. (However, I am partiall)" colorblind.) The object appeared in the direction of Beckley, which was southwest or 11\r position. As I looked at the object, it appeared to travel downward and to ~ right at an angle or about 45 degrees from the horizontal. The object appeared to move through the slq' at about the same speed as a shooting star (meteor). As the object neared the horizon it disappeared abruptly, and three or four smaller objects having the same appearance as the "fireball" went in various di.rectiona at the s speed aa the original object. The total size of all the smaller objects d to be much less than the size of the original object. The smaller objects disappeared almost inmediatel.y'. The duration of m:r sighting was about J or 4 seconds. Prior to, and after the sighting there distant lightning flashes and thunder. The object was startl:Jng and would have been frightening had it not been of such short duration. My reaction at the of obsexvation was {and still is) that the object was (1) an usually large liiieteor, (2) a satellite burning up in the air, or (J) "ball n lightning (if there is such a thing). o~.'OS~e.cr lfPfE!ItEI U.
