An unusua11y fine hugf' UFO inse rted itself into a photograph on February 6, 1 959 ncar Boulder, Colorado. The witness had spent the afternoon cl imbing on Flagstaff ~fountain und, about s:oo P.M. , snapprd a pictun o f the town of Boulder, to the southeast. Although he had seen nothing unusual in the sky or in the air, the negative, when d eveloped, showed a small bh1ck blob that printed as a white, luminous, roughly spherical objcct,-a typical flying saucer investigators in the area procured a copy of the photograph and sent it to NICAP for evaluation. The witness him- self did not immediately assume that he had photographed an inter- planetary spaceship hovering over the city of Boulder; instead, he sent a print and a d escription of the circumstances to Dr. ~lenzel, who was well acquainted with the geography of Boulder and Flag- stall ~fountain. Dr. ~fcnzel suggested that the blob of light could have been produced by some type of reflection: .. The sun appears to have been prt'lt)' low at the time. Is the re, in the approximate po:;ition of the hloh, some lou!'e with a fairly large window that <..-ould have hen 1fflcdiug the sun? Staud at approximately the same spot and luut o,.,,, the region with n Rcld ghass. A hright spot like this often <tJH'f'&HI~. cuormously on the fllm. This was in F chruary, and the ang le of the sun will t l tJ\\ laaw~ changed. l,lcase make this test and let Not until the first w<tk of t\fay, howe ver, was the wihu~ss able to repent his cxcur!-ti>n a mi make the ueccssary tests. Using a copy of lai~ original pictun: as a guide, he was nhle to stand in the exac:t spot fro m whida ' " Ia t<l take n the picture. He tlwn rl'alizcd that the I ~w Bnildirn~ ' f I he University of Cnlorado stood in the place occupied by the C J'O and that the big douhle window of the Law nuilding was at llac txac t ce ntcr. In ~lay no reflcction appeared , but from ealc ulatious lu:! found tha t the positiou of the Fehruary sun was such that tla~ window, when optn at just the right tilt, \\'ould reflect the sm'(j image to th(~ exact spot on Flagstaff ~fountain from which he toHk the picture . The image of the r('OcctC'd sun is extremely bright and the film had bee n overe xposed : therC'fore the ima~e had spread on the 61m to create the large UFO. To confirm the hypothesis, the witness tried ov<'rprinting the negative so that the entire picture came out practically black, and with ~uccessivcly it d o wu to tlw ~maiJl~t ~izc 011 tiH; bl.td , e.')l pd:tt, he c<Ju!l l ~.t:"' i l lt' fuzzy outline of a window [2]. fLREIGN TECHwOLOGY DIVISION,lFSC UN~WSIFIED FOREIGN TECHIOL06Y DIVISIOI,lFSC UNCWSIFIED reneet:..' n tool( it over to nov don . \ to run i .. :!cvq r, r \~ 'l'OinJt l ~H.! you.:' la ~ ter ~ and thrc ...... rh h~ w did you r a.
