Tho object appeared to he about. Lhe size of a basketball, glolJing red in c olor, and hat! a :')lue streak "tail" estlnnted to be 30 feet long . observer stated that tho leadi n g edge of the object appeared to be uniform and smooth while the trailing cd1;o was r ough and irregular. These airmen stated they were sittin6 behind Puilding S- 706 (Administrative Buildine, 44Lth ~I3 Area) scannina for a squadr on aircr aft that was to l~nd on nunway 33, ,.,hen thc>y-first observed \-Jhat appe:1red to be a Hhi te ball o:f fire, ahout the size of a dime, with orange tail, about the l ength of a standard lead pencil held at arns leneth. The object was firs t sigi.ted on an azimuth of 1250 and arproximote .:mgle of !,5, descendinB and disappearin on an approximate azimuth of 105 and approxiMate ungl e of 10-15. Object when first seen appeared to burn out then rear-pear ed on the 5ame trajectory briefly-before disappearing completely. Total time .of observation 'l-Ias 1-3 seconds , no visual aids ,.;ere uced and no aircraft 1-1ere observed in area a t of sighting. also of the 4LLth FIS, reported substantially the same information with the following vari.:~tion: After first observing the object di:Jappear, he never Hitnessed the s econdary-appearance, and although he never checked his watch at the tirne of the sighting , he believes it was betreen 1800 and 19002 hours. H.r ted that due to t he '<finding road he could not state definitely what direction he Has heading in 1:-ut felt reasonably sure it was to the east. Subject described object as having the characteristics of a jet aircraft with approximately half of the dark colored fuselage en gulfed in flames. He first observed the object t o his right, passing in front of his truck nnd disappearing behind trees to his l eft, and could Give no estimate of the distance involved. Hr . Quick also stated that approximately two hours later he ot-scrved ~moke rising from a wooded area approxiinately two miles v1est of Cross, S . C., and \:as under pinion that it \TOuld have been in the vicinity of the crashed airplane. Total time of observation was 10-15 seconds. l!o visual aids were used and \vas heard. 4. No aircrew- men reported unusual oi ghtings and no explanation could be given.
