The 12 Janu17 1958 edition of the Roanoke Ti:ues, a daily neva- paper published at Roanoke, Virginia, contained the following article: "Strange Objects Reported in Sky in 1 Valley ~ea early to~. State Police at Salem received a report from a m~ho reported a large object in the &ky with what appeared to be a ball or fire trailing it. He said he saw it about 12:20 A.M. In addition, state police ~ reported that the object or objecta had beenseen by persona~ in Floyd County and near Draper in Pula:Jki. Origin of the strange object vas not knovn early today." On 15 .Tanuary 1958, Special Agent. JOHN R. McNEIT.r. interviewed Mr. Route 3, Salem, Virginia. furnished the f olloving information concerning the unidentified fl1ing object which he allegedlY sighted on 12 Januar.y 1958: Description of the ObJtct: a. The cone appeared to. be a cone or fire~ given ott troa the object itself. The forvard part of the sphere appeared to be o f greenish fire and the remaining part was red i n color. d. Only one (1) object vas observed. e. No formation of any type was noted. f. The object was void of shape except for its roundness~ and accompanying cone. g. A trailing cone of vhat appeared to be fire about as long as the sphere and vas the same color.
