A-BomlJ Site WHITE SANDS PROVtNG ; Th~ Army today reported niat a. hug~ oval object "nearly a3 . bright as the sun" was spotted Sunday hoverinl neat bunkers , used in the first atomic bomb j explosion. I The ~i~htings were made seventeen hours apart by two ditfer~nt military police patrols' nn this southern New Mexico missile testtn~ range. Tile first :1tomk:: bomb was. touched off : on the northern edge of the area. July 16. 1945. I First Lt. ~.tiles F. Penney, commanding ... officer of the M. P.'s, said none of the men had heard radio reports or seen newspaper accounts of similar sightings in Texas yes- Both sighting were in the area ot abandoned bunkers - used by-techniciaru \vho ob- served the world's nrst atomic . explosion. Lt. Penney said one sighting wa.s made by a two-man patrol at around 8 p.-m, Sunday. Sp. 3/ c Forest R ; Oakes ana : Sp. 3 / c Barlow reoortcd that time their patrol saw a brigh t t light, Specialist. Oakeli\ thouttt hanaing abou~ 1\fty feet above the old aoom bunker. ''It was very brlght," Specialist Oakes said. He said his plltrol was two or three miles we.~t of the light. The earlier sighting came at 3 a. m. Another two-man j eep patrol consi~ting ot Cpl. LA PAZ . SAID ALL REPORTS~ INCLUDING THOSE MADE TODAY, WERE_FOR~ARDED TO THE OIFICIAL GROUP AT ~RIGHT PATTERSON AIR FORCZ BASE IN OHIO WHICH IS INVESTIGATING SUCH PHENOMENON As for the White Sands sightings, the AF explanntion spenks of lights seen by ~ j planes patrolling the area." 'l'his is the tlr st mention an~,"w'here of plane~; all the , ne~.7spaper accounts said lichts Vlere seen by tvro t,k,-man J.eep patrols -by one at 3 : a.m. and by an~ther at 8 p.m. the S3J!le day (Nov. 3). Didn't the A:F knon about the jeeps? Did it know about them and prefer to ignore them, and why? Or were they merely being careless about their >jlO.,OOO facts? Were t.he liehts also seen by planL.;? I ~iha.tever the reason for this discrepancy., we can test the AF conclusions only against I the reports or the jeep observerr1. Says the AF: "The reports of the plane pilots were apparently explainable by the planet Venus :tn an unusually favorable positior. for observation, or by cloud formations around the moon." So far a.s the jeeps are \ concerned, the first explanation is all wrong and the second is preposterous. ~ Venus . is NEVER visible at all at J o'clock in the morning, and on November 3 it, had 'set at 7:30 p.m., half an hour before the second jeep patrol saw a~ything. As for the al- ternate explanation sugeested, the soldiers' descriptions of wha.t they saw {pa.ge 2) indicates that such celestial acrobatics of "cloud formations around the moon" {in Ne;r Mexico s notoriously clear skie3) were never seen before nor since. r ..
