It so happe ns that on the evening in question I was out looking for Sputnik II l<Ti th a friend of mine who ,.10rks for the government. We did not see the Sputnik, because it passed over earlier than the predicted time, but I was rather start l e d to observe a stellar-like object, which appeared in the northeast a t an altitude of abo~t 30 and move d v ery rapidly, in about three or four seconds, in,.1..rather f lat traject ory across the sky before it disappeared almost directl y in the west. I commented tha t because of its spee d and direction, the object could not be the Sputnik. I had also never seen a m2teor with s uch a long path, at leas t considering i t s relatively low brightness of about the firs t magnitude. }~ friend insisted that it ought to be reported and h ence I did.
