Bt!nder (no relation to Albert K. Bender or Connect.icut), who arranged tor Lex to meet and intervievr the \'litness two \'teel<s after tho event. This is one o1 the pe1hopa-unprecedented crop ot .UFO appearances on l~ovember 6th thnt made that day euoh a dies rnir~bilis in American saucer annals, The observer was l{r. Jacques N. Jacobsen, Jr., or Staten Island, a young man trained as a microbiolo,P.st, \'tho ngw holds a ros!)onsiblo position in Nevr York City w1 th a large railroad compi.I\V. In the first weelc or Hov(';rnbor he was on vacation,. hunting deer in the .. big. 't10~.cls. ot Qu~b~c .. vrith three. fr.~ends, ... \Villiam l:iunday, \'Til- lim Totten, and Robc)rt Dnvisori~ .. They viere .stAying at Sullivah 8 Hunting Lodge on Lake Bast:atong, about 100 miles north or Ottawn. There was no electricity at the camp, but they had trith them a portable radio or the ordinary kind and also a por- table short-,rave radio "of the type used 1n World War II landing cratt." (Both llund~ and Danson are professional electronics workers, and radio hams on the side.) On the evening or the 6th they vtere listening to the radio, \Vhich was reporting tTFOs seen evcry'\"there J reception was subject to fading, but many stations could be picked up. . , At about 9 p.m, Totten went out to the outhou~e; he carne back breathlessly exclaiming: "There's a flying s~ucer out here1" The others laughed, and suggested that he invite tee little green men in for coffee. (Ur. Jacobsen thought he'd bet- ter stress the fact tho.~ "the vrhisl:ey had run out two 'nights before.") However, he insisted, They r,ent out on the porch and sure enough, there it uas, To the east of south, El :'huge brilliantlj -illUI:linated sphere," one-eighth to one-sixth the appnrent diameter of th~ moon, was hanging a few hundred feet over the summit or a hill two or three I!liles away. Uight this actuall~:-have been a misinterpretation of some celestial body? By no mcar.s. The sky had been completely overcast by low- hanging cloi.:.ds fo:-several hours, nnd t}'l.e object was beneath these clouds. This was beyond any possibility of do,Jbt, because conical beams or light fanned out from both the top a.!"ld tr.e bottom of the o~ject~ The lower bemn lit up the tops of the pine trees 0:1 tl:e !:illtop; the upper beam :tllu!ninated the under surface of the low clouds. (See the accompanying sketch, copi(1d from Mr, Jacobsen's.) The bright- ness of t!~e object was dazzling--"like ',~.-' .. !'~' color \7"'S yellowish-white, not the bluish- Q \';hi te of a !!lnntle. Because of the glare, 1, ,,,\ its edges were not sharply defined. It ,',.'~\'.'.. did not flicker, pulsate, or oscillate. J.!f~:r. ~ 8 x 25 binoculars revealed no further de- -- - the same position. l~r. Jacobsen took two 35-mm photographs, which had not yet been developed t.ro ':eeks later. (It is hardly to be expected that they will show anything more than a dot of light.) 1':'hile this ,ras being seen, it was discovered that there was "no reception" on ~r.e portable radio. Munday tried the short-wave radio, with the same result: on r.one or its bands could anything be picked up--not even t.,he government time signal, which invariably car.te in clearly. But there vtas one exception: at one frequency a ver.v strong signal was received. It uas a rapidly modulated single tone, some- '\':he.t like Morse code in effect--but !l Morse which would have been reeognized:-l!r. Jacobsen could not recall the frequency, but thought it was in the vicinity or 2.5 o,.. 25 megacy~les--not 1.4.286 megacycles, where a "m~rstcry beep" signal from some- thing moving in the sky had been received that week all over the earth, pole to pole.
