I was driving West on ~\atella Ave, on m)" way home. As I approached the Santa Ana Freeway overpass, a strange light appeared in the sky mead of T'l'e and a little to my right. It was visible for tnly a moment. I continued up onto the bridge, which crosses over the freeway. As there was no traffic on Katella Ave, I stopped my car to look for the source of the li~ht : had just seen. I instinctivly reached for my Gratlex Centt:.ry Came:-a and advanced the roll of film one frame as a precaution against a d~:>le expoSt:re. I then opened the car door and as I was getting out fer a be""r~ter vie'h of the area, I set my range at r stop at 4.5 and shtj.tter at l/10 second. ~Jhen I stood up by the car I saw the light again. It appeared to be approxiiYtately 650 above the horizon. It see~ed as thou6h it was hovering over Disneyland. The shape. or the lig~t resembled a s~all blimp or a very thick cigar. It appeared to be a ~eird gaseous ~ass glowing in a vivid pinkish red color similar to t~a~ of a railroad flare. Looking ac~oss t he top of the carand bracing ~yself between the car a.."ld open d.cor, : s-r.eadied r:;;i ca--:1era on t :-:e top. I located the light in my viet-r finder a..~=. s:1apped t:,e picture. ~v"lile I v-;as advar~cinr:; the fiL, for a~otr.er s~ot, t~e light dissappeared, I only took ny eyes away from for a ~o~ent. e~ I looked back it was gone. I have no idea what of it. ! stood there a few minutes scanning the sky hoping it Might reappear. I soon gave up and drove on home thinking I had photo- graphed a li6~t deflection of some sort. ~Jhen I got off work that afternoon at 2:00 and I drove to Supply in Garden Grove. I intended to leave the fil, or re5ular 2 hour processing. There was only one unexposed fra!"e left on the roll and my friends and I 1.zere anxious to see what I had photographed. Y.!y consversation with !l.rs was overheard by a photographer ld th the Garden Grove Daily ;:ews, who sted upon taking the films to his ne't.;spaper stating that t:e would develope the roll free. Ee took the film with hi.'T1 in his car and we followed in my car. ~1hen we arrived at ti,e newspaper, he took the unopened roll into the darkroom and developed it while the three of us waited in the city room. After the film was processed, he called us in to look at the negative saying," You didn't get a da'T!n thingV Upon closer inspection of .f'rane 7, ,.rhich was quite dense, revealed a s'nall vague inage. another Garden Jrove News photographer conferred with their city e~itor while the negative was drying. StatP.1ent o Then enlarged and printe1 t he negative in question. I was amazed at t,he sphere which appeared on the print "'aa not evident t c t he naked eye at the time I took the picture. The entire image was more defined than my eye had preceived it. A TRLE CCPY RICHARD A. B;,IM Photographs, for "that were printed in papers.
