UFO Investigative Center 1Jiri ght-Patterson Air Force Base Dayton, Ohio D&ar Sirs I'J{h c ;,tr e November 9, 1966 I am sending you the account of a " UFO sighting experienced by my husband and myself some years ago. I hope it will interest you. I am a writer and editor, currently under contract to Doubleday in New York. My husband is a in Ri chrr.ond , Indiana, where our Very truly yours, in business Richmond, Indiana l'!ovf)mbar 9, 1966 My experience w:i th a UFO occurred 10 years ago, on September 15, 1956. On this day I was scheduled to address the Woman's Pre3s Club of Indiana as its ater-luncheon speaker in the French Lick - Sheraton Hotel at French Lick, Indiana. (I am a Doubleday author and frequently serve as a speaker for church, civic, and \roman's groups, conventions and service clubs.) Because of the distance from Richmond to French Lick, my husband and I left early in the morning. It was a very unpleasant morn! ng, extremely dark, with JX>Undi ng rain and beating wi ndn. At daylight we were in southern Indiana, and it was there th3.t tie sa.-~ At the time, we were approaching Salem, Indiana. I do not know the exact time, but it was between 6 and 7 a.mo closer, I think, to 6 a.l'l". The rain w1.s now only a misty drizzle, but the rr.orni ng wao wet and gray. \1e came up an incline to a gort of hilltop (I do not know the 9Xact location) which looked out over a flat area of fields and fences as I recall. P.ly husband \'las drivine, intent U{>On th~ wat road. I looked out to the left and saw, hovering over the fla t area , a flying saucer t At first I w-1as m o surprised and start led to sp-8ak a't all" I stared, unable to believe my eyes, thinking I must he rni ntaken but no, there it wast So I starrmered to rny husband, "Loolr out there quickt Do you see what I think I sae?" He took one look and brought the car to a stop. We s a t there on the hilltop (or rise) and stared. I said, amazed, "Why it's a Flying Saucerl It is isn't it?" My husband, who is very conservative, answered, '"Nell, it certainly ~ppears to be something 11 ke that 1" My irst impression was that it looked something like a gunmetal yo-yo. It appeared to be made of t\~ sections o f dark ~ln metal w:i. th an aperture between them. From this aperture, as if from windows, port-holes, or similar openings, carne wisps of white sn:oke or vapor which seemed carried slightly to one side by the wind. The UFO was hovering,-as I have described, but constantly undulating as it hovered. (Please see amateurish drawing , attached.) At this n10ment, we became aware of another car coming up behind us a.nd my husband, hoping for another witness, leaped out and tried to flag 1 t down. The driver, a man, gave him a scared look and sped on. Two or three other cars came from behind us (perhaps people going to work) and my husband tried to stQp them, with the same result. 'V-Ie bot. h shouted and pointed to,,ard the Uro, but the passenl!ers sped on ~dthout looking at it. We ware disappointed, but not surprised. Nobody wants to be stopped on a lonely road in tlla rain at the d awn's early lig~ by a couple of excited and g esticulating strangers t (The roa d was lonely only at this hour, however. It i s a well-tra v e l e d At least 5 minutes passed while we watched the UFO, p erhaps 10 minutes. Then, all of a sudden, it turned on one edge, like a plate on a wall, and VANISHJ1'D~ I say "vanished'' becr1uso never, in all my life, h ave I seen anything move so fast. My husband and I h ave wentioned this many times, and agree that the speed with t-1hich this object dis- appeared into the distance was indescribable, inconceivable, if not actually impossi~let It reminded me a little, but only a little, of the mo1ie cartoon which sho\-IS one person chasing another up a road. Su:ldenly whsst, both are out of sight. But even this, which seems funny to audiences because it is such an exaggeration, would seem ~low by comparison \d th our UFO. As it vanished, it held the position I have mentioned, tur:1ed on one edge like a plate on a \"Tall, or on a side board. \-le could no longer see the aperture, or the srroke (?)wisps. More than once we have tried to estimate the siza of the UFO and its distance f'rom us. This is hard to do, since events move d so rapidly, and we can only agree that it was "Quite close" to us and that it \fas "''ery, VERY large." I have read many journalistic jibes about "little green men flying around in little saucer-machines" but had no such impression of ti"J.s "saucer rr.achine." J.:bst accounts say the witnesses were ''terrified" Htrans- fixed '"'i th horror" "speechless with fear" and so on. (r~ore journalistic Esperanto, pe1rhaps.) It does seem r1atural to feel frj gh tcned by ~nJ ch c'.n "abnormal" si gr .t, bnt my husband and I felt n:.J tear whatever, nor any apprehension whatever. We didn't see any "little green m9n" or expect to see any, thoug h of cour~e v1e assumed that the craft \#as being piloted "by somebody." I think we both felt that it \~as probably some sort of Hli.li tary craft being tested by the United States Air Force, and publicly un- announced as yet. About its size we agree that it was "ahovt the size of the court house" which, in Richffiond, is a mighty big court houset When ""'e reached French Lick I re 1.:1 ted this expert ence to Hortense Myers, Indianapolis INS editor, and asnistant chairman of the Press \\'on~n' s convention. She told rre they had be~n a sla:d not to publish such reports, and advised me to say nothing about it. ('l'o tell you the truth, I don't think she believed rr.e.) It has been more than 10 years since then, of course, and we hava read many reporto aoout UFO experlences during this tim~, but. h:ave had no morP. such experiences ouraelve:J. Nor have \'le r 3ad any a ceo unts wh:i. ch des crl bed the "gunmetal co lor" \'le S.:l~.t~, or the wisps of smoke (?) or vapor (?) emitted from the cente r opening. And because there is a very serious interest in investigating UFO ac- counts at this time, I decided to send you mine Craft a dark gunmetal, very large in size. Center aperture a darker color, a3 if recessed, alrrost black. Wisps of something like vapor or smoke emitted from center aperture as if through portholes, w1 ndows, or sirr.ilar openings. Trailin~ to one side in the wind. Place: Near Salem, Indiana, Septe~ber 15, 1956, soon after dnyli~ht.
