' On June 19 1973, 1913, EST was sit.ting in stern of skiff at anchor on the Flats 5ust East of Kara~hon -estimated position, latit.ude North 240, 41 min., 15 sees., longitude West 81, 4 mins.~ 40 sees. -watch- ing my wite tlght a bonefish from middle or skitt. Fish had been hook- some 10 minutes. Captain was s eated in bow of skiff wind Beaufort's No. 1, dry, warm (approx. 800) few stars, just at twi- light, no clouds ot any kind save a thunderheaa below Bah1a H~nda Bridge (some 12 miles distant) which we had been watching earlier in the after- noon, wonderina it it might come up on us. The cloud had remained sta- tionary and the distance was quite easy to judge as ~e had an unobstruct- ed view ot the sea and the 7 Mile Bridge was some 2 miles to our right. Cloud formation was obviously South:8t the termination ot the Bridge and indeed we learned later that it had been squalling at Bahia Honda duri~g tha late afternoon and early evening. There was no rain or any kind at Marathon until after 2300 EST. . There were no ships in sight~ nothing showing in the Stream, and not even skiff any place near us. There was no noise or.any kind and indeed, just prior to hooking the fish we had remarked on the absolute peace and quiet of the scene. The fish was running more or less due East, and I was following his course, when suddenly, out or the sky,as though a flash- light had been turned on, appeared a semi-circle or light (yellow in color, ,,i th a greenish tinge) , altitude 30o, estimated taght Aooo tt. , moving on a 2550 true course. The brightness ~as approximately that or the moon at a similar altitude, the size about 2/3rds or a half-moon -- which was indeed its shape. Object remain illu~inated for approximately 3 seconds and then faded so that there was practically no l iminosi ty. At the end of about 2 seconds of darkness, object again illuminated for 3 seconds, went ott for 2 seconds, again illuminated, and after about 2 seconds, made a 900 turn and ~isappeared behind a cloud bank I wasable to tollow the path ot the object somehow, even when it was not lt111inoaa, and knew exactly where 1 t wo1.Jld emerge. The distance that the object ran dur1na the some }3 se~pnds " had it in vie\Y was approximate1y. .naut1ca~-~1lea. u, reason for stressing the cloud bank formation ~ its distance is that lt is by means or this that I i marked the length or the run. When abeam the object had an altitude of ahout 300, and my recollection is t.hat when it disappeared, its altitude was approximately 10. This latter figure may be errontous. If my recollection is correct, it would indicate e1thera (1) that I was wrong on my est te or the height or the object when abeam (possible, ~ut lt it was higher, ita size must have been completely tantastic), (2) that I miajudled the run or the object before it dis- appeared (seriously nelieve this to be improbable, as I had the cloud bank well marked), (3) that the object gained height on the run (this latter,.,.,.,..~.,;~ in my opinion). To m8 the most striking feature or tha fantastic episode is the abso- lute and complete lack of noise that accompanied the phenomenon. There was not a sound or any kind, either betore or after its appearance if' you can exclude~ exclamation "Jesus Christ, what's tpat?" It is ~ opinion that Captain saw the object simultaneously with me and that my wife looked up and saw it at a traction or a second after I did. The three ot us were able to follow it during the entire The formation as mentioned above was that of a was brightly i1ghted, but there d1d appear to be after-part --triangular in shape, attached halr-moon. round half-moon that a dim, to me, very to the base ot the I have heard, but do not know picked up on Key r-est radar. ot m1 own knowledge, that the object was Respectfully submitted, S of r'Ml ! .iintO, Ch1ef ~ ~clan, a.
