Enclosed is a report oi' an observation of two objects ("lights") seen in the sky on the night o1' July 19-20 over Lavalette, t~. J. Since these lights were very similo.r to t~-ose reported over \'lasiungton, D. c., the same night, and since they dtd not resemble any aircraft known to the observers, ei t!1er in appearance or in manner of motion and dis- appearance, I arn submitting a complete description for possible corrala- tion with other si111il.ar reports. I have purposely delayed this report since I have no intention of allo\dnz ~ name to be associated in "newsprint" with the so-called "i'lying saucer scare". Therefore I am giving my name and position below, I . request that they be used only for your files, or be given o~ to the Air Force should you judze this report worth passing on to them The objects described were td. tnessed by ncseli' and a companion. We have carefully compared our irnpressions, and the description given consists of those inpression3 agreed upon b,y both. Description of Object~: a. !_t-IO movin:; l!&11~ were seen, each havinu tho same appearance: approximately f-9~.9- and OJ'!l}f1 y~l.:Lcm.J.n color with dul.L red altel"n&te~ diffusin$ over r.1uch or the surface. They seened about f..iv:e t;~a the apparent-size of yen_us or Jupiter, but only t1-10 or three times as bright. I b. The "lights" were first soen tot.,arcts the_ sgutl}, .]ust off-shore, about 1& the center of the ''milky '"~", at an approximate eleva- tion-angle of .4Q. They moved northuard slouly, one behind the other and following nearly the same path. They appeared to be at least t-to j-mile apart and moving at less thM _lqo ~.p.h. (assur.ting their apparcnt- distanco from' the oooervex3 of five-to ten-miles.). At the point where they passed al.Jnost due east or the observers, they appeared to be at least Snoo ft. high, the approx. c1evation-an3le being 45. The second, o1 trailing, light did not keep constant-distance or course with the leading object. c. Shortly after pass inc; to the cast of the observers both lights gradullly beg::m to tum west~ towards land, passin3 over the coast- line at approx. 6o -elevation north of the observers. Continuing to circle, the lights p3Ssed to the west at approx. 50-elevation, th:ln around to the south, re-cros31ng the ~hore-line at about th9 saoe angle. nzring this first circling, both liehts ~w smaller and fainter, but more . yello~f in co1or; the trailing one grew fainter more-rapidly, and appeared to drop further behind and to shift course slightly to south of the lead:ing one. At no timo did 8.IV SOU!l~t come from th9 l ights d. Out at sea, they continued circling, the radj us or. tum beine r.ntch SJ:laller, such that the brighter leadin& object crossed the shore- line again just south of t :~::! o .. s.:lrvcrs at about an ~<>.?-elevation. Doth continued to grow much fainter, smaller and :.10re silvery in color, occasionally disappearing an'-' reappoarine, as though passing over hibh, thin clouds. 'l'he ~-~c;9n~ .light completely .PP. c! just ovor the shor_elin_o. 'l'he first light continued l'restward, very faint like a 3maJ 1 star; 1 t seemed many m:.les hieh, aml :1ovln~ more_rapidly. It finally dis- appeared in the west at about a $0-elevat:i.on. The :total: elapsed time f'rom first fli8htin::; to i'inlll disappearance was about f'i v~. or six r.tlnutcs. . NOTlh When the objects were first soen, they roseJ.\bled ni3ht- wather-balloona ("pibal-balloons carry:lne candle-lant()m). Ho'fever, their 1~ddish color and circular course were not at all like such a balloon. Their motion gave the definite impression of directed control, but the complete sUcnce of the objocts and their apparent rapid climbina to veey ht~h 8it1tudc did not resemble (to the observers) any known plane or dirigible A TRUE COP.Ya PETER B VENABI.E Aast Chief Combat Intellieence (..:.4 VIr lfLAJIIK) AIR INTEWGENCE INFORMATION REPORT ttirDU.CeH(;,Iiirii -- i ;; :~ILLI.~ D. llOUL!:I Capt, UShl' Chief Intelligence .
