DOWHOJtADED AT 3 ,~ DEC!.ABSfYIEO ~ ~AR lNTEJr : l>OD n~'7F.4R 12 YEAR. Slrlu1 hu 1~ many UFO repot ts. On Da:ember 10, { , at 7:15P.M. P.S.T., -.e pilot and radar observer of an F-94 on rou- tine patrol duty were .over the town of Odena, \Vashlngton, at about 18,ooo feet when t~ aaw a large white light in the east [t). Dim reddish-white lights seemed to he coming from windows, and no tmd or exhaust was visible. The pilot attempted to inter<.<ept but the object performed amazing feats-did a cltnndclle in front of the plane, ntshed away, stopped, and then made straight for the aircraft on a eollision course at incredible speed. The pilot banked to avoid eollisfon, and afterward was not able to locate the objeet. The radar man then got a brl<.of return but soon lost contact. the visual and radar contacts had not coincldoo, both men assumed that they refcned to the same objE'Ct [ ~. p. 65]. Investigaton suggestt.'<l at ftrst that the object might have been one of the Telemulc balloons, bnt this idea had to be discarded and the sighting was listed as Unknown. A review of the evidence by the present authon suggests a highly probable explanation. the low cloud cover at 3000 feet the night was clear and moonless. In the east, Sirius was just rising over the horizon at the exact bearing of the Unknown object. Atmospheric refraction would have produced exactly the phenomenon described. The same at- mospheric conditions that caused the mirage of the star would have caused anomalous radar returns (see Chapter vm) .
