Soarco csti:ated altitude to bo 500 Two rt'mnr"ab1e falls of angel hair were reported in France on October 17 an(l ~7. 1952. In hoth Incidents, wl~esses ohserved In the sJ strangely shaped, cottony cloud at a heig f several tltOu sand feet. Above It wasa long, narrow, cylindrical object trallro by a white plume, moving slowly across the sky and accompanied by twenty or thirty sm1dlcr objects thut looked ltke puffs of smoke. Following a broken path, they made rapid zigzag motions, an~ left broad ribbon of white suhstnm:e thnt slowly drifted tu the ground and clung to trees, telephone wires, and roofs of houses. ~1ese masses of white threads were described as like wool, nylon, or Flber- glas. \Vhen rolled into a bnll they became gelatinous nnd disap- peared within a few hours; set on flrc, they humed like cellophane. To French entomologists, the nngel hair seen in October 1952, was no mystery at all. The ubje<'ts dancing the strange ballet were not ~.-eships, hut spiders. Far from pcrformin mystE-rious cx- pt-rir. ... nt, they were mC'tcly carrying out the weJI-cstahJished routine or migration. Each year the young spiders of most speciPs le-.we the nests of tht"ir infRncy and prcpnre to cstahlish their own homes. Crawling by the hundreds or the tlaousands to the tops of fcn<.'C post!', walls, or tncs, they spin long silken webs which, inflated h)' the air, carry the tiny t'migrants up from tlw ground. These gossamt'r parachutes drift up and along on rising air currents, sometimes to great he ights; the)' may soar for n few yards or for many miles over hills and vnltcys. These migrating halJoonists have been obscr\'cd as high as 14,000 feet, and at sea 200 miles from any land. Ev<:ntually drifting back to earth, the spiders detach the now llselcss parnchutt"s and move off to build new nests for the coming yuar, while the aban- doned gossamer may pile up in great masses on trees, fences, tele- phone wires, and ground, to dE'Cay and vanish in a matter of hours. TI1cse gossamer showers sometimes include so man)' outworn webs that the 6lmy blank(b of Rne silk may be severul incht.-s deep and may cover an entire landscape like snow. Thc~c migratio:1s occur in spring or, more frequently, in autumn -hut only whl'n th(;' \\ cather is cxa(tly right. Spiders may sit pa- Uc>ntly for days, ,,.,,iti:-1 <.'alm, dear, windless day.
