'l'h18 object wu followed with a theodolite ns it appeared ver:r bright in comparison with the dlmming balloon lit;hting unit. It was not seen with the naked tqe because it seemed more important to follow 1 t closely w1 th the theodolite and record the angles and change of color. this object waa oval or diak shaped with colored lights of red, an4 blue arranged hor.lsontall7. The colored lighta, when olearl.7 visible, appeared rectangular in shape with ro'..Ulded comers. The brlghtuees of the lights eeened to depend on th9 angle of' observa- tion as the object moved. "During the 11 minutes observed, the object; which was southeaat; or the station; etayad within the reciprocal aozimuth angles or 118 degrees to 130 degrees and angl83 or elevation or 20.5 dee;rees to 23 .o deg1ees. The object made three oomplete ciroles in that area. It was not JDOVine verr tast. As the object moved, the colored lighta seemed to fade and a blue-white light was ob3erved. When seen through the theotblite. this blue-\'lhite lightW18 as bright as a star or the first magnitude. The object appeared to be circling the lQO-gram balloon. "The observer estimated the object as being at least 10 miles tram the point of' obaervation at WBAS, Bo3ton, and at a height or 2S,ooo tt. when first noted, later climbing to a hei~ht or .3S,ooo rt. It sealed mil.ike]3' to the obsen-er that jet planes could wm repeated'y in such an area as recorded. The observer checked with the Airport Traffic Control Tower and the Air Route Traffic Control Center to see if arr:1 planes ware boldine 1D. the area. Negative replies were reolved from aJ l concemed. UI~CLASSlFiED of Special 1m .
