As soon as the additional bllp was noted on the GCA rtldarscope, the Tr~ffic Controller notified'the C-~7 to break pattern, el1mb to 10,000 feet, try to zte.ke a vi:mal sighting and to intercept the target. Upon arrival to i t3 new altitude, they tried vainly t~ make a visual sighting and interception, but tbia was impossible due to poor weather conditions that existed at the time The a~rcraft vas vectored 1n ~ the GCA team to the headings of the but no vis,,al sighting or contact \las made of the t!l.rget. 3. (1) At 0?12Z the undersigned, a.s a GCA crew chief, observed an unidentified target on an approximate heading of 109 in the vicinity of the Ketlavik Airport Rsdio Range St~tion. The target wae observed for approximately one minute in a right turn nnd vas last; observed on an approx1mste heading or -;60 (~) ~t 072~Z a target appeared at approximately the same poei- tion headJng 340 and making a lett turn. 'Ibis target was ob~erved for 30 seconds snd vas last seen heading approximately 250 (3) At 0715Z tbe Control Tower vas notified to relay a reessage to the Base Operations Office for the Ee.se Operations Officer or his assistmt to come out to the GCA unit (4) At 0733Z a target appeared at approx~mately. the s~ position heading 340 and u.aking a left turn. This t arget was observed for thirty (30) seconds and w .s last. seen hegding approximately 250. (5) At 07352 the Assistant Base Operations Officer arrived at t he GCA unit (6) At 07452 the target appeared for approxim~tely thirty .(30) se~onda in t~e vicinity of the Radio Range Station. A few roin- utea later Capt. H~rtscb called me to come back up nnd to listen on the. earphones. '.Jhen I placed them on J!r:f ee.rs 1 heard the CCA ';TAn or opera tor describing the speed that this airplane or .-hatever it t.."3S ht~.d just travelled across his scope. He s ta.ted tb.'\t he he.d clocked F-e6' s on speed runs on radarscope and he kne\1 their speed vas. over 700 mph. and IT!ore, and that. this object that had just gone acroas his scope s much faster than the S6's he had clocked. R~rsch and myself then took the C~47 up higher trying to get a bove tbe top layer or clouds to try to see it 'We could see anytl1..ing. e cli:I!bed ~s high es 10,000 t't. but the. upper cloud layer -was still a fe~; thou sa.'1d teet above us, so w levelled off.
