(Fragment ot Metal found PERioD on Canal and Bourbon Street 15 22 August 1949 Intersection, New Orleans, r,a.) oFFicE oF oRIGIN On 13 August 1949 DO #9, Earksdale AFB, ta. r---S AL IN~UIRY -UNCONVEN~IONAL AIRCRAFT . on 13 August 1949, at approxiiDH~e!y 2145 hours, a metal object allegedly fell to the pavement at the intersection of canal and Bourbon Streets in New Orleans, Louisiana. This object is pie-chaped a pparently of a metal alloy construction. The exterior is covered with a sooty substance while under- neath the metal is of a silvery-gray color. Two (2) sides ot the object are rough, indicating that the metal may have been broken trom a larger piece. The rounded edge of the object is apparently a finished edge. The object varies in thickness from a pproximately one-eighth inch (1/8") to one- halt 2" ). AfHQ FOM 0-208 AT NEW OR!,EANS LOUISI~NA: street, revealed that he was on duty for the New eans Police De partment at approxima~ely ~145 h ours, on August 1949, at the 1n~ersect1on of canal a nd Bourbon Stre e ts. At this time, Mr heard a sharp expl osion and after a lapse or five ( 5 ) minu es, a whirring sound which e nded in the clattering or a piece o f me~ai to the pavemen~ approx1ma~ely ten teet (10) from wher e Mr. wa s standing . Mr. did not observe the object until it had struck the pavement, at which time, he took the object into custoay, ~nd a name of one (1 ) witness, a Mr. of Street. According to Mr. there wa s no evidence of exhaust or any odor connected with the obJect. ~r. described ~he whirri noise which h e heurd a s a1m1lar to a scream. Mr. checked building s in the 1DDnedia te vicinity to ascertain if t h e object c ould have f a l len rrom one (1) o! these buildings, but ~here wa s no evidence o! Mr. turned this object over to OSI Agents and the object ia now in the custody o! 9th OSI hea dquarters, Brxsdale Air Force Base, Louis~ana. or street, for the Illinois central Railroad , revealed on 15 August 19 , that on the night o! 13 August 1949, at approxlmately 2145 hours, he ~nd his wife were sitting in their parked at the intersection of canal and Bourbon Streets. 'fhe automobile was parked approxi Ll & tely four 4 car lengths from place or the Lmpact of the object. Mr. did not -observe the object in flight, but did go to ~he scene as soon a s he heard the clatter or meta~ on the sidewalk ana saw the crowd begin ~o gather. According to Mr~ the first ~erson who noted the object s a news vend intersection who wa s identified as treet. r.sr. related that ab driver had observed the incident and urged the news ontact local newspapers and report the "tlylng disc". Mr. also stated tha~ the policeman on duty at the in~ersec~ion was not aware or che object until he lled to ~he scene by a member ot the crowd which gathered . Kr. did not observe any amoke or fumes in the vicinity o! Street, identified hirnBelf as the news vendor who had !irs observed the object wnich struck ~he pavement on 13 August 1 949 . xr. was appro~imately ten (10) to twenty (20) teet from the point o! impact and the object which narrowly ~ssed a pedestrian. A ot pedestrians were at the intersection at the time and a crowd soon gatherea. Members of the crowd urged Mr. to contact the newspaper and report the "flying disc" and a er or the crowd called a policeman to the scene. Mr. could otter no further information relative to ~he ' BUildings diately adjacent to the area at which the object a~legedly fell were examined by OSI Agents on 19 August 1949. It was impossible to locate a source of the object in any or the builaings inspected. 5. The object which was recovered by Patrolman is a pie-shaped object apparently of a metal alloy construction. The exterior ia covered with a sooty substance while under- neath the metal is or a silvery-gray color. TWo (2) sides of the object are rough, indicating that the metai msj have been broken trom a larger piece. The rounded edge ot the object is apparently a finished edge. The object varies in thickness trom approximately one-eighth inch (1/8") to one-half inch It should be noted that the only positive information indicating that the object came from the air was from Patrolman which was reported in Paragraph 1 above. Contrary to "o n statement, tne two (2) additional witnesses reported that was not aware of the object until he waa called to the scene from hia traffic duties after the dis- covery ot the object. Mr , news vendor, stated that he did not see the object until it had struck the pavement and later stated tbat it had tallen trom the air.
