CONCERN: On the afternoon of 25 Jla7 1949, I . was in the Supply and Salvage Yard with Colonel Petersen and Mr . Shaughness,y of the Air Inspector's Office, aDd :Lt Gable a.cd Mr . Van Leeuwen of Base Salvage. While we were standjng in the. yard.discussing thecondition of the Salvage Yard,_; I heard an "airplane overhead) which sounded to me to be quite high. I . : . -:. . looked into. the sky in the direction from which I the-sound seemed to be : . \..: . . :~c. comit:g 'aDd . .'c~d not discern. the plane. However, .in scann.::.ng the sky, .: ~=~. ~ , ........ ~ . ., I observeda.;globular object.travelirig slightly east of south, at what ....... . .:.,; : ... _. .. I estimated-~to be approximately' the same .speed. that a C-47 travels . I .... .. ~:~ .. remarked to. the compacy in general that I sa~; a globular object. and Lt. . Gable, after asking me the general direction, stated that he saw it also. He also remarked that he saw one a while ago traveling in the s a 'lle general direction., I only sa"JJ the one and did not kr!OW that he had seen one previ.ously until. I called his attention to the one I saw We discussed the probability of its being a weather balloon . With 'no:basis for my judgment other than the fact that when I first saw it, !~expected to see a plane, I estimated it to b~ at least llt , OOO feet above' sea level. The first view lasted possib~ 15 seconds, after which I .los~ sight of it, then sane 15 to 30 seconds later I saw it the sacond time for pos3ibl.y' 10 seconds. With north as zero, I estimate the first si(;ht was at 4 o'clock. Mr. Shaughnessy stated that he glanced his watch-when I me!ltioned 1 t acd the time was l4o7 . . ~ The object seened to me to be (Ner the west slope of the .Wasatch. - . Range alld slight}J south or due ~st of Hill Field, which i.f" 'l'li:f impress-.. ion of .the heighth. alld distaDCe was correct would indicate -that .'the .. :--' object was-conai ierably larger than a wea. ther balloon.. . . . . . -~ . .
