At 1330 a call was received from the BaD.tord Area (Coacrete) tbat a F~ Saucer was over the East 200 area approximately 4 (four) ailee east of the Haford Atomic Plwt, Waahiagton. The ord operator cleared the aircraft into their prohibited area (authorization coming froa the Aaa t Chief' at tbe Security Section at Hanford). The scopes were instructed to arch the eoathern sector with ao resnl te. Crew personnel and the controller searched the a~, rlsua~, and aoted a rOUDd, white ar eilver object traveling 1n a north easter~ direction at a speed greater thea that or jet fighters at approxtmetelr 10,000 to 15 The baee ther section was then contacted to eee if any weather ballons nr eent up and they reported ill the negative. Base weather eection stated that the7 do not utilize weather ballons. At 1420 F-82 Gertru:ie 20, pilot Gardaer wae air borne and reported ill to Torch controller. A get, 81, was being tracked 1D the h-east sector by Torch at tbia tilae and the ADCC iastz'ucted the controller to intercept it in hopee that it aight be a Disk. Target 81 faded in radar contact just after (approximate~ s m1nutea) Gertrude 20 airborDe. The controller was able to pn two vectors before target 81 faded. Radar contact with the fighter 8p0t'ty, eo poor that a coherent track on the fighter was impossible. lt approximately 1425 Hanford reported falling bits or paper in their area {ia the Ticinity of the Rattlesnake Momata1na). The operator described the papers u being approximate~ 6 inches sqnare, red on one 14 green aa the other. The search continued, with spotty radar coverage, with no results. Tre Hanford oper a tor a ga i n cleared t he F-.::2 i >,to t he prohibited area and indicated that he, himself, was taking off in an airy-lane to search. He stated :-urther that a weapons carrier h.ad been dispatched to the pamphlet (paper) drop area and no paper~ had been tound. The fighter was vectored to the Columbia river gorge to lesf3en the time to be flown in the prohibited area. At approximately 1525 a call was received from the Hanford operator that the papers d~opped were advertisements for a Rodeo at Richland. The Rodeo is an Air Rodeo. The Hanford operator indicated that the pamphl~ts did fall into the prohibited a rea r :1d were dror !"ed by one of the a ire raft pe.rticipa ting in the Air :Rodeo. The aircraft that was droping the pamphlets was a PT-19 flown qy Don Wise of the Ato~ic Speed~ay in Pasco, viaehington. Tbis pilot holds a commercial ticket. The air- craft NC nu-nber is (NC 48258). At 1426 the F-82 was cleared to i1~oses Lake Tower and landed at 1435. 2. It is believed that ;;wo sel='arate and alstinct alert conditions existed on the af'ternoon of ~1 !Jay 1949. The first was caused by t he sightirJgs of !T'lying Sau ers (noted) b~r lianf'orc: using a telescope and tl:e operations ere:: of t l1e 637th .A.Ui:C. The second was caused by t 1le ropping of leaflets b,y an a~craft into the Hanford area . I t is be- lie-ved that there is no co.nection between the tv-:o events 3.
